at fullerton and a.j. rickoff schools i worked with seventh and eighth grade students in a one month residency. this program was inspired by hip hop culture and used elements of graffiti and rap. students first worked with performance poet carla thompson to create ‘ego pieces’: poems which highlighted their strengths, making themselves into gods. carla and i co-taught the middle stage of the program, performing poetry and drawing in a shared classroom studio. the last stage of the residency allowed students to visualize their own poetry, immortalizing themselves in a permanent graffiti mural at their schools.
